"Why Do You Like The Classics?"

Sloane Wehman

Sloane Wehman

"Apart from being an interesting topic to learn about, the classics provide us with lessons and teachings that persist into the modern day. Classical philosophy and literature provide us with ever-relevant concepts that are as important to study as any modern ideas."

"I study classics because it tells us so much about our world today: the human condition through mythology, our current systems of government which are based on classical civilizations, the modern English language which derives so many words from Latin, and so many more connections!"

"I study latin/classics because the language is flexible, making its literature artistic and nuanced in many different ways. There are a lot of parallels between a lot of my interests and Latin that I didn't think I would find. For instance, the word order is actually super free like music, where there are rules within the subject, but every little improv is meaningful and creative."

"In the classroom, I have learned how to think critically especially as I examine historical texts by Caesar or Tacitus from a modern perspective. In every challenge, I find beautiful connections between the past and the present."
